Color schemes

gnome-terminal supports three color schemes: the Linux console scheme, the color Xterm scheme and the rxvt color scheme. These define the intensity and colors for the sixteen ANSI color combinations that are supported by the terminal.

Primary color combination

When no colors are specified, the program can use a number of values for the default foreground and background colors. White and black in the following description map to the colors as defined by the color scheme for white and black.

The stock supported modes are: white on black, black on white, green on black and black on light yellow.

Setting the foreground and background

In addition to the stock color combinations for foreground and background the user can select its own foreground and background colors from the property box.

Additionally, the user can drag a color from any GNOME color selector or color source and drop it into the terminal. If the user drops the color on a white space, it will set the background, if the user drops the color on a cell that contains a character, it will change the foreground.
